The nation is set to celebrate the 48th Victory Day today, paying tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to liberate the country from the clutches of Pakistan occupation force in 1971. Different socio-cultural organisations and educational institutions across the country will celebrate the day through special programmes and performances.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) is celebrating the occasion through a two-day programme featuring discussion, recitation, plays, music and dance performances at the academy’s Nandan Mancha which began yesterday.  Marking the Victory Day, Theatre (Bailey Road), one of the most prominent theatre troupes in the country, will stage two special shows of its highly-acclaimed production ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ today at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).

The first show of the play will be staged at 5pm, while the second show will be staged at 7:30pm.

Directed by the late noted theatre personality Abdullah Al Mamun, ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ is one of the masterpieces by  prolific writer Syed Shamsul Haq. The play has recently been redirected and designed by Sudip Chakroborthy.

Also, on the occasion of the 48th Victory Day, Channel i is organising a day-long fair ‘Bijoy Mela 2018’ on the channel’s premises in the Tejgaon area today. The programme will begin at 11am at the presence of freedom fighters, artistes of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, members of Bangladesh Football and noted cultural personalities. University of Dhaka, in association with cultural organisation Chhayanaut, is organising a programme titled ‘Sokole Mile Desh-Gaan Gaibar, Desh-Kotha Bolbar’ at the central playground of the university. DU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman will inaugurate the event at 3:40pm.

The programme will feature group dance performance, solo music performance and recitation.

To observe the 48th Victory Day, Sammilita Sangskrtik Jote has organised a six-day programme, which is being held at eight different venues in the capital. The inaugural ceremony of the programme was held on Thursday at Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. Today Sammilita Sangskrtik Jote will bring out a procession from the Central Shaheed Minar. Eminent theatre personality Ramendu Majumdar will inaugurate the procession at 10am. l
