A section of students of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College observed a two-hour token hunger strike on Sunday demanding the release of grade nine class teacher Hasna Hena, who is in jail, in a case filed over the suicide of Aritree Adhikari, reports UNB.

Witnesses said around one hundred students of the school staged sit-in in front of the main gate of the school’s Bailey Road branch around 8 am demanding release of Hasna Hena, also former acting vice-principal of the school.

Later, they observed a token hunger strike from 11 am to 1 pm.

While talking to reporters, Farha Dolon, a student of the school said, “Their teacher Hasna Hena is innocent. We want her to be released from jail immediately.” .

Talking to UNB some other demonstrating students said they want proper investigation into the incident and immediate release of their teacher HasnaHena.
The students also submitted a memorandum to the Education Ministry demanding  withdrawal of the case filed against Hasna Hena and her reinstatement  with due respect.

Meanwhile, Zannatul Ferdous Shila, a teacher,  went to the demonstrating students and offered them drinking water around 12:55 pm to end the strike. Acting Principal Hasina Begum and other teachers were present there.

Later, the students left the area.

The students have been demonstrating since Thursday demanding their teacher’s release.

Detectives arrested HasnaHena from the city’s Uttara on Wednesday night amid protests of students over the suicide incident . A Dhaka court sent her to jail the next day.

Ninth grader Aritree committed suicide by hanging herself on Monday, hours after the school’s teachers allegedly insulted her and her parents for carrying a mobile phone at examination hall.

Her father DilipAdhikari later filed a case against three teachers, including the principal,  of the school.

The Education Ministry on Tuesday formed a three-member probe committee which found three teachers of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College responsible for the suicide of AritreeAdhikari.

The governing body on Wednesday suspended its three teachers, including acting Principal NazneenFerdous.
