Barishal-free day observed

Barishal Free Day was observed yesterday amid a daylong programme organised by local administration and Muktijoddha Parishad in the town.


On this day in 1971,  'Mukti Bahini' (freedom fighters) took control of the city, the then district headquarters and second largest river port of the country defeating Pakistan occupation army in several pitched encounters.

The day long programmes included hoisting national and organisational flag, discussion. Discussion and cultural programme held at Bijay Bihanga, the memorial constructed to remember the incident.

The programmes were participated by huge number of freedom fighters, representatives of pro-liberation forces, socio-cultural-political organisations.

The discussion meeting held on district Muktijoddha Sangsad office premises was presided over by Sheikh Kutub Uddin Ahmed, Commander of Muktijoddha Sangsad, and Barisal unit command.

Speakers of the progamme demanded immediate execution of the highest punishment of the all war criminals.

They also calling for preservation of the places and evidences connected with liberation war said mass killing ground and other places reminiscent of the glorious liberation war in the Barisal city, are in a neglected condition even after four decades of the victory.  

Udichi, Barishal unit, and Barishal Natak jointly arranged a discussion and cultural function at Bijay Bihanga at Amtala crossing of the city yesterday afternoon.
