Hotel InterContinental Dhaka begins operations

Hotel InterContinental Dhaka is back in a new form, beginning operations in a limited way from last Sunday.

After the makeover of the former Ruposhi Bangla Hotel, it started as InterContinental Dhaka on September 13, when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated it.

Shahidus Sadik, director, marketing and business promotion of InterContinental Dhaka, told The Independent that everything in the hotel had been redesigned except the location and the building.

When asked about the exclusive amenities, he said that spa zones had been built with one of the largest ranges in South Asia. Besides, environmental protection had also been given the highest priority. For this, the entire hotel illumination has been done in a way to save 30 per cent electricity.

It is the 203rd international hotel of the InterContinental group using all types of modern technology, he said.

The hotel has 226 rooms and their sizes have been increased to 400 sq ft from 226 sq ft, Sadik informed.

“The hotels location is very convenient for tourists and stakeholders. So, we hope to become more competitive in the hotel business in Bangladesh,” said Sadik.

The hotel currently has around 600 full-time employees.

Around Tk 600 crore was spent in refurbishing the hotel and it took four years to complete the work, said hotel officials.

The hotel has the most comprehensive and highest capacity meeting and event facilities in the city where you can host any type or size of events. The hotel offers over 21,000 sq. ft. of combined indoor meeting and exhibition space. There are nine small and large banquet halls including two ballrooms and seven meeting rooms.

The hotel has ultra-modern meeting facilities and banquet facilities with high ceilings, high-speed internet, audio visual, digital technology and other tailored services.

A temperature-controlled swimming pool, fully equipped gymnasium, steam room, sauna and spa treatment rooms are also there in the hotel.

State-run public company Bangladesh Services Ltd (BSL), the hotel's owner, has provided the finance from its own funds and bank loans.

The makeover was supposed to have been completed by December 2015 but it took two and a half years more.

There are five restaurants, including all-day dining with buffet, lobby café, club bar, pool bar and restaurant and specialty restaurant.
