543 appeal for review

NOMINATION CANCELLATION
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
543 appeal for review

A total of 543 hopeful candidates submitted their appeals to the Election Commission in the last three days, challenging the cancellation of their nomination papers during scrutiny.

The returning officers on December 2 cancelled a total of 786 nomination papers out of 3,065 on various grounds including conviction, graft cases, loan defaults, flawed filling of forms.

With the submission of appeals being over, it has been found that a total of 243 candidates did not appeal to the Commission, challenging the cancellation of their papers.

A total of 222 drop-out hopeful candidates submitted appeals yesterday, while 237 filed appeals on Tuesday and 84 on Monday, said EC secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed yesterday.

So far, 2,279 candidates are valid after the scrutiny of the nomination papers on December 2.

Now, the EC would hold hearings of the aggrieved aspirant candidates to settle their dispute from December 6 to 8.

EC will hold the hearing of appeals from 1 to 160 starting at 10 am on December 6, while on December 7 the hearing of appeals from 161 to 310 would be held, and on December 8 the hearings of appeals from 311 to 543 will be held, EC sources said.

During the scrutiny some heavyweight aspirants including Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is now in jail after being convicted in a graft case, senior BNP leaders like Aman Ullah Aman, Sultan Ahmed, Aminul Haque, Morshed Milton, Major (retd) Md Akheruzzaman, Joynal Abedin, Kamrul Islam Mohammad Walid, Abdus Sattar, Kamruzzaman Kamrul were disqualified.

The nomination papers of aspirant candidates Bangabir Kader Siddiqui, Golam Mawla Roni, Ruhul Amin Howlader of Jatiya Party, Reza Kibria who is the son of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria, were rejected due to loan defaults and other causes.

Meanwhile, advocates on behalf jailed Khaleda Zia yesterday submitted three appeals to the EC, challenging the cancellation of her nomination forms from three constituencies—Feni-1, Bogura-6 and Bogura-7—where the BNP submitted the nomination forms for her.

Barrister Kawsar Kamal submitted appeals for Feni-1, Barrister Nowshad Jamir for Bogura-6 and Advocate Masum Ahmed for Bogura-7.

The Returning Officers cancelled her nomination papers on the ground that she had been convicted for over two years in a graft case. The EC’s law bars anyone convicted for two years and before the completion of five years after his/her release.

However, BNP has termed the cancellation of Khaleda’s nomination papers as a “blue print of the government”.

EC secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed yesterday told the media at the Election Bhaban they would upload the final list of the candidates on its website on December 8.

The withdrawal of candidacy is on December 8 and the electoral symbol would be distributed on December 9.

The candidates are allowed to start election campaign from December 9 after getting the electoral symbols to contest the polls on December 30.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda yesterday at a meeting in the capital instructed all the members of the electoral inquiry committees to handle the complaints of the aspirant candidates with great care.

“Consider the complaints of all aspirants equally,” he added.
