The police found the body of a two-and-a-half-year-old boy and rescued his bother from the capital’s Bangla Motor area yesterday (Wednesday).

The body of Safayet was covered in a shroud and was lying on a table. His brother Surayet, 4, was sitting on the lap of their father, Nuruzzaman Kajol, said the police. The father has been detained.

Maruf Hossain Sardar, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna division), told reporters that they were yet to ascertain the cause of the boy’s death. The body has been sent for post mortem examination.

Maruf said Nuruzzaman Kajol is mentally unstable and his wife had left him. Their two sons lived with Kajol.

Kajol claimed that his younger son died from electric shock and that he had not killed him.

The DC said they did not see any cut or wound on the body of the child.

“We cannot confirm how he died. We have to wait for the post mortem report. We entered the house and found the whole house in a haphazard condition. Kajol did not look normal to us,” said the DC

Earlier, the police said a man threatened to stab the elder child with a sharp weapon. The police surrounded the two-storeyed building after being informed that a drug addict had killed his two-and-a-half-year-old child.  Later, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel, members of the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense joined the police to rescue the elder child.

The incident drew hundreds of people to the scene since the morning. At one time, people became excited and wanted to beat up the father when the police detained him.

The child’s body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post mortem examination, and the rescued boy was in police custody.

Local residents said Kajol was a drug addict and for this his wife had left him. His father is Monu and his family is well known in the area.

Kajol’s brother Nurul Huda said when the younger child died in the morning, Kajol called in a khadem from a local orphanage and asked him to perform his son’s janaza. The khadem went with him and as soon as he reached Kajol’s house, he tried convincing him to let go of the elder child as he saw Kajol was keeping the child as a hostage.

Kajol with his two sons lived in the house. Neighbours stayed away from him for his drug addiction, said Nurul Huda.

Kajol’s sister, Jahanara Begum, said his nephew, Safayet, was suffering from jaundice. Her brother was unable to provide him with treatment and so the child died. His wife Priya left him because of a family feud, and had no contact with the children for over three months.

Jahanara said Kajol stood at the door with a sharp weapon when he heard that his wife was coming. His brother was angry with his wife.

Being informed, a team from Shahbagh police station, led by the officer-in-charge (OC), Abul Hasan, went to the house and found it was locked from within.

According to the police, Kajol was sitting cross-legged with the elder child on the lap, and the body of the younger one on a table when they reached his house. After prolonged negotiations, the police were finally able to rescue the elder child.
