‘Insulted’ by teachers, student commits suicide

A class IX student of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College reportedly committed suicide at her home in the capital’s Shantinagar area yesterday. Family members claimed that she took her life after being insulted by the school authorities in presence of her parents for using mobile phone during an examination. The deceased, Aritri Adhikari (15), was the daughter of Dilip Adhikari. Aritri’s parents found her hanging from a ceiling fan of her room and rushed her to the hospital where doctors pronounced her dead. Bacchu Mia, Sub-Inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, confirmed the news and said, “She was taken to the DMCH at 4 pm where the on-duty doctors declared her dead.”

Quoting family members of the victim, the police official said the principal of the educational institution called Aritri’s parents to her office yesterday. It was for a mobile phone, which was found in her possession during the final examination on Sunday, he added.

The father of the deceased said that the school authorities asked them to collect a transfer certificate for Aritri saying she used mobile phone in her examination room that was unfair during an examination.

“The principal and other teachers humiliated her in our presence. Although my daughter offered apology several times, the teachers didn't listen to her, rather they asked us to get out of the office,” Dilip told reporters at the DMCH.

Despite several attempts, this correspondent could not reach the Viqarunnisa Noon School and College principal over phone for comments.
