The egg controversy

Ever since the domestication of chicken happened, people have been relishing the flavours of egg. The humble egg has impressive health credentials ranging from vitamins to proteins. But, this inexpensive source of nutrients had been always looked as two different entities-'egg whites’ and ‘egg yolks’. While a set of researchers believe that the former is healthy, there is another set that considers the latter nutritious. Let’s resolve the mystery.

The reason for a bad reputation

Earlier, eggs were not looked upon as a harmful indulgence, but with time things changed and eggs earned a bad reputation. The core of the issue lies in eggs being looked upon as being loaded with cholesterol. If we go by the reports, every egg contains about 200 mg of cholesterol and about 6 grams of fat. According to the American Heart Association (AHA) an individual should limit the cholesterol intake to 300 mg per day. This makes egg a bad indulgence especially for people with heart disease risk.

 Benefits of egg whites

According to nutritionists, egg whites are considered a concentrated source of protein and one large bowl of egg white provides approx 7 gms of protein and a considerable amount of riboflavin.

Benefits of egg yolks

They don’t have any protein content and are high on cholesterol only. Also, they contain choline, a compound needed for brain health. They also contain vitamin D, vitamin A, folate, vitamin B-12, and vitamin B6.

Benefits of whites and yolk

The idea behind consuming whole eggs is to create a balance of protein and vitamins that they together as one healthy food ingredient provide to the human body.

Whole egg or just the white?

If you need to lower your cholesterol intake then egg whites are ideal for you. And if not, then it’s better to go for whole eggs for extra nutrients. The choice is yours!
