BNP races against time to prepare for elections

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD, Dhaka
BNP races against time to prepare for elections

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is facing problems as it does not have much time to prepare for the poll slated for December 30, according to party sources. The party's nomination seekers are desperately looking for documents to be deposited with nomination forms. Many of them do not have documents with them.  Besides, the party will have to share seats with partners of the 20-Party Alliance and the Jatiya Oikyafront, depriving many of its potential candidates, said the sources.

Talking to The Independent, a number of party leaders said they have many tasks on their hand, but not enough time to complete the process. Many of them said their main challenge is to ensure a free, fair and neutral election, overcoming obstacles created by the government, administration and the Election Commission (EC).

“The EC has announced a poll schedule, ignoring our demands for deferring it by one month. So, we will be in trouble to complete the election process, including collection of necessary documents, for submitting nomination within a short time,” one of them said.

A senior leader, preferring anonymity, said the AL started its poll campaign a couple of months ago, whereas the BNP has not been able to launch its campaign even now.

“The Awami League is set to interview its nomination seekers from Wednesday after completing the selling of nomination forms. But the BNP will continue selling nomination forms to aspirants,” said the leader.

BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, who has collected nomination form for Chuadanga-1, said the role of law enforcement agencies and the “one-sided attitude” of the administration and the EC were posing serious problems for them.

He also said the government, administration and law enforcers should maintain a balance between the ruling and opposition parties for holding a neutral election.

The BNP leader further said selecting party candidates and carrying out campaign at the grassroots level would not be a big factor for them, if the obstacles created by the government, administration and the EC were withdrawn.

“If the voters can cast their ballots freely, they will give a fitting reply to the AL,” he added.

BNP assistant organising secretary Abdus Salam Azad said many of the aspirants cannot collect documents to be submitted with nomination forms within a short time.

He, however, said the party has more than one eligible candidate in all the 300 constituencies and the party will not face crises for candidates.

The BNP leader, who also collected nomination form to contest from a Munshiganj seat, alleged that the EC was not acting neutrally.  He also accused the government and the EC of creating obstacles so that they cannot go to the grassroots level to campaign.

The BNP, which had boycotted the January 5, 2014 general election, and its partners in the 20-Party Alliance and the Jatiya Oikyafront on Sunday announced that they would take part in the ensuing polls as part of their movement to restore democracy, despite there being a severe adverse situation in the country.
