Bangladesh has become a self-sufficient nation on meat production, Livestock and Fisheries Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda said yesterday.

He also said the country witnessed 72.60 lakh tonnes of meat production in FY2017-18 as compared to 10.80 lakh tonnes in FY2008-09 (an apparent rise of 61.26 lakh tonnes) due to different government initiatives.

The minister said at a two-day-long ‘Research Review Workshop, 2018’ at Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI). According to Chanda, the country recorded 1.25 lakh tonnes of surplus meat production after meeting its annual demand of 71.35 lakh tonnes in FY2017-18. Meat production has increased seven times in the last 10 years, he said.

“Milk production was 22.90 lakh tonnes and that of eggs was 469.61 crore pieces in FY2008-09.  These had increased to 94.06 lakh tonnes of milk and over 1,500 crore pieces of eggs in FY2017-18—a sharp rise by 4.5 and 3.5 times respectively,” he added.

The minister further said the government had taken various pragmatic measures and extended policy support and assistance to boost the livestock sector in the last 10 years,

thus paving the way to become self-sufficient in meat production and nearing self-reliance in egg and milk production as well.

Among others, lawmaker Dr Enamur Rahman, fisheries and livestock ministry secretary Raisul Alam Mondal, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council executive chairman Dr Kabir Ikramul Haque, Livestock Directorate director general Hiresh Ranjan Bhoumik and BLRI director general Nathu Ram Sarker also spoke at the workshop.

The speakers appreciated the government’s initiatives and the departments concerned for achieving self-sufficiency in meat and fish productions, including hilsa. At the same time, they expressed concern over the fall in shrimp production and export. They suggested some solutions for the government to resolve the problems in this sector.
