BNP to clarify stance on nat’l unity, Jamaat in Sep 29 rally

BNP to clarify stance on nat’l unity, Jamaat in Sep 29 rally

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will make clear its stand on national unity and the debate on the Jamaat, a major partner of the 20-party alliance. This will be done at its public meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan on September 29, according to party leaders. Indeed, the public meeting is going to be held demanding unconditional release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and the holding of the next general election in a free and fair manner. But the party also wants to make its position on different emerging issues known, said the leaders. The party will also focus on the filing of false cases, arbitrary arrest of party leaders and activists across the country, and reply to the statements of ruling party leaders on various issues, they added.

Some leaders indicated that the party might announce a fresh course of action demanding the release of Khaleda Zia, serving a five-year jail term in a graft case. They, however, said the party was yet to take any decision in this regard. The BNP is going to hold the meeting when AL leaders, including general secretary Obaidul Quader, are carrying out election campaign by train, road and launch ahead of the 11th parliamentary polls, likely to be held sometimes in December.

BNP standing committee member, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, said they would hold the public meeting demanding the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia and the holding of the next general election in a free and fair manner.  He said they are yet to discuss whether any programme would be announced at the meeting.

BNP chairperson’s adviser, Joynal Abedin Faruk, alleged that ruling party leaders have started their poll campaign by train, road and launch but kept their party leaders and activists on the run by implicating them in “false cases.”  He said the BNP is part of the national unity and the public meeting would strengthen it further.

“As the largest political party, we have some different issues, including release of the chairperson, which would be focused at the public meeting,” he said.

Party sources said, Jatiya Oikya Prokriya leaders will be invited to their September 29 gathering in the capital. BNP joint secretary general, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, said though the national unity is already visible, there are some issues which should be cleared to the people.  He said a fresh programme for the release of chairperson Khaleda is likely to be announced, but no final decision has been taken.  “The demand for the release of our chairperson and holding the next polls under a neutral government after dissolution of Parliament and deployment of the army will be made at the meeting,” he added.  He hoped that the government would give them permission to hold the rally on Saturday.

The BNP has deferred its public meeting from September 27 to 29.  Speaking at a press conference at the party’s central office yesterday (Tuesday), senior joint secretary general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, said they are preparing to hold the public meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan on September 29 instead of the 27th.

The BNP held its last public meeting in front of the party’s central office on September 1. However, it is yet to get permission for Saturday’s meeting.
