AL finds nothing to worry about greater unity move

AL finds nothing to worry about greater unity move

The ruling Awami League (AL) is not worried about the process of forging greater national unity, led by the Gonoforum president, Dr Kamal Hossain, and the Bikalpadhara Bangladesh president, Prof. AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury. The AL’s top leaders think that Dr Hossain and Prof. Chowdhury’s efforts to forge a greater national unity will not eventually succeed as no national unity can be forged keeping aside the country’s old and major political party Awami League.

Dr Kamal Hossain and Prof. AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and other eminent citizens have endeavoured to forge a greater national unity under the banner of Jatiya Oikya Prokriya in the last couple of months. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the main Opposition outside Parliament, on Saturday joined a rally of Jatiya Oikya Prokriya in the city, where the demand for the formation of a poll-time neutral government through talks with political parties was raised ahead of the next polls.

The Jatiya Oikya Prokriya had also issued an ultimatum from the meeting that

their three-point demands would have

to be met by September 30, and announced a plan to hold rallies across the country

from October 1.

However, several central AL leaders told

this correspondent that they were not

at all bothered about the Jatiya Oikya Prokriya. They said no conspiracy against the AL-led government would work ahead of the next polls, scheduled to be held at the year-end.

Speaking to this correspondent, AL presidium member and health minister Mohammad Nasim said: “They (B Chy and Dr Kamal) have only staged a drama in the name of the process of forging a greater unity. The country’s people know them well. Who are they? They are some isolated faces. We are not worried about their efforts.”

“These are the faces who conspired against AL president Sheikh Hasina to negate her during the 1/11 changeover but eventually failed. Now they are again trying to hatch a conspiracy against us, but this time, too, they will fail,” he said. AL joint general secretary

Mahbubul Alam Hanif said: “We are not worried about either their Jatiya Oikya Prokriya or their ultimatum to form a neutral election-time government before the next polls. The next polls will be held in time, as per the constitutional guidelines. No evil force will be able to halt us from holding the next general elections.”

Meanwhile, AL general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader has termed the “greater national unity” a hotch-potch unity, claiming that that it will not survive.

“The unity of Jukta Front, Jatiya Oikya Prokriya and the BNP is actually a mishmash unity. I don’t believe that their unity will survive,” he told journalists after inaugurating Puspodam restaurant in Cox’s Bazar yesterday.
