CMC opens regional HQ  in Dhaka next month

China National Machinery Imp & Exp Corp or CMC is going to control its activities of the South Asian region by the middle of October, basing its head office in Dhaka rather than from Beijing, Hong Kong or Thailand. Kang Hubiao, Vice President of CMC and Chairperson of South Asia Regional Centre at the CMC, revealed this to a delegation of Bangladesh journalists in its Beijing headquarters on Sept 14. As part of its plan, CMC has already made its office ready in Bangladesh.

Kang Hubiao informed that the South Asia Regional Centre would act as an entity in Bangladesh rather than only as a facilitating body. CMC that focuses on economy, environment and people’s livelihood while doing work wants to create a South Asia Regional Centre brand in Bangladesh.

This regional centre, by its employment plan, would take only 10 per cent people from China while 90 per cent from Bangladesh.

Addressing the visiting journalists, Kang Hubiao described its business activities in Bangladesh for the last three decades and the fulfillment of some social responsibility in the country through a power point presentation.

Kang who will head the centre has a long time of direct working experience with the people of Bangladesh in Dhaka.

One of the most prominent foreign companies that engineered and completed major projects in Bangladesh, CMC successfully finished the Barabukuria Coal Mine Project and completed all payment of supplier’s credit, an achievement of the company that is very positively viewed in Bangladesh.

CMC is also involved in the expansion of the Barapukuria Power Plant Project and did the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) of Sirajganj I & II Power Plant Projects.

In May this year, conducted by CMC the gas turbines of Sirajganj 225MW Combined Cycle Power Plant (3rd Unit) Project performed a successful ignition, Kang said.

The CMC Vice President also told the Bangladesh journalists that the Payra Power Plant, a joint venture between the North-West Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (NWPGCL) and CMC, will start power generation from the next year.

He said the Payra Power Plant would be a ‘benchmark’ in the field of power generation as it would use the state-of-art technology for the purpose. Going green is the pronounced goal of this plant, he said.

When it becomes fully operational, it will add 1,320 megawatt electricity to the national grid. The plant will consist of two units, each with a capacity of 660MW. The first unit is slated to come into commercial operation on April 30 next year. With the estimated cost of around

US$1.56 billion, the plant is being built on an area of 397-hectare.

CMC is also responsible for the EPC of the 20-kilometre Dhaka-Ashulia elevated expressway that is being built under the PPP (Public Private Partnership) initiative. The expressway will connect Dhaka airport to Abdullahpur, Ashulia, DEPZ and Chandra on the North Bengal Highway and will ease traffic jams in these places.
