The ‘IFIC Bank Sahitya Puroshkar 2016’ (IFIC Bank Literary Award 2016) was conferred for the sixth time, with the introduction of a new segment called Sahitya-Ratna Sommanona. Veteran writers Khosru Chowdhury and Shakoor Majid were given the prestigious award this year, while eminent writer Hasan Azizul Huq received the first Sahitya-Ratna Sommanona.

The awards were handed over to the recipients at a function held yesterday at the IFIC Tower in the capital’s Purana Paltan area. Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor Fazle Kabir attended the ceremony as chief guest, while IFIC Bank chairman Salman F Rahman and IFIC Bank managing director and chief executive officer Shah A Sarwar, senior officials of the bank and invited guests were present on the occasion.

Hasan Azizul Huq, a pioneering short story writer and novelist of Bangladesh, was honoured with the first-ever ‘Sahitya-Ratna Sommanona’ and Tk. 10 lakh for his distinctive contribution to Bangla literature.

On the other hand, Khosru Chowdhury won the award for his book ‘Sundarboner Bagher Pichu Pichu’ and Shakoor Majid was awarded for his book ‘Pherauner Gram’. Both writers were also awarded crests, certificates and Tk. 5 lakh each in cash as the most creative litterateurs of 2016.

“One can win an award in Bangladesh without any persuasion or lobbying—I see an incident of its kind for the first time here now,” Khosru Chowdhury said, shortly before expressing his feelings by reciting Tagore’s poem ‘Pran’.

Shakoor Majid said after receiving the award, “This is a joyous day for me as I have received a grand award today. The process of giving this award is so impartial and kept highly confidential that I had no idea that I was getting this award before its announcement. As Khosru Bhai (Khosru Chowdhury) mentioned earlier, and I have heard from many writers—even from those who didn’t win this award—the ‘IFIC Bank Sahitya Puroshkar 2016’ is the most neutral award in the country.”

In his speech, Salman F Rahman said, “Among all the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities we do round the year, we (IFIC Bank) think that we are doing the most important work by giving away this ‘IFIC Bank Sahitya Puroshkar’. The award is getting popular day by day.”

“This year, we have introduced a special award, ‘Sahitya-Ratna Sommanona’. As Hasan Azizul Huq Sir accepted the award today, it was actually he who honoured us. We will continue to give this award every year,” the IFIC Bank chairman added.

To note, IFIC Bank is the first government-and-private joint venture bank, which is committed to the welfare and economic prosperity of the people and communities of Bangladesh. In addition to giving priority to the country’s economic growth, IFIC Bank inspires literature and various cultural activities to ensure the society’s sustainable development.

IFIC Bank has awarded contemporary creative writers since 2011 in recognition of their exceptional merit. Every year, two books from six different genres of Bangla literature get selected for the award. From the aspect of the prize’s monetary value, this is the country’s biggest award.
