Curtain falls on five-day event today

The curtain will fall on the five-day theatre festival today on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital. Began on September 4, the festival--organised by Industrial Development Leasing Company of Bangladesh Limited (IDLC)--features popular  productions of 10 prominent theatre troupes of the country.

‘Circus Circus’ and ‘Open Couple’ on concluding day

Today, on the concluding day of the festival, theatre troupe Prachyanat will stage its popular play ‘Circus Circus’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA at 5pm, while Nagorik Natya Sampraday will stage its new play ‘Open Couple’ at the National Theatre Hall at 8:30pm.

Written and directed by Azad Abul Kalam, the play ‘Circus Circus’ was the first full-length play by the group and was quickly recognised as one of the major productions of the year. The yearly publication of International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1998 singled out ‘Circus Circus’ as the most promising new play by a new theatre group.

The outline of the play can be told in following terms. ‘The Great Bengal Circus’ once enjoyed widespread fame under its founder owner Laksman Das. The company is now being managed by his brother, who rebuilt the company that was ravaged during the liberation war of 1971.

In the course of events, the company arrives at a village to put up a show. The company is plagued by a number of problems - unskilled performers, strained relationship and rivalry among the members etc. As if to worsen the situation, members of a fundamentalist religious group threatens to stop the show. The hostility is growing not only outside but also from within. In such a precarious moment the fundamentalists unleashes a reign of anger and hatred. ‘The Great Bengal Circus’ is totally gutted in the fire along with its three players and all its animals.

On the other hand, Nagorik Natya Sampraday will be staging their new play titled ‘Open Couple’ by Dario Fo and Franca Rame. Ziaul Hasan Kislu and Sara Zaker are expected to play the respective roles in the play. The play ‘Open Couple’ has been translated and directed by Sara Zaker.

The participating troupes in the festival are—Theatre, Nagorik Natya Sampraday, Dhaka Theatre, Padatik Natya Sangsad, Palakar, BotTola, Prachyanat, Prangonemor, Dhaka University’s Theatre and Performance Studies Department and Jahangirnagar University’s Drama and Dramatics Department.
