Several agreements likely during Modi's Dhaka visit

Several agreements including on trade, connectivity, $2 billion Line of Credit (LoC) and cooperation in power supply are expected to be signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Dhaka visit on June 6-7.

The Indian Prime Minister will pay his two-day state visit to Dhaka at the invitation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as both the countries hoped that Modi's maiden Dhaka trip would further strengthen the excellent bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries.

Announcing the visit, India's External Affairs Ministry said, "This visit, Prime Minister Modi's first to Bangladesh, reflects the importance attached by India to the bilateral relationship."

Another announcement issued in Dhaka yesterday by the Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Ministry said that "the visit will further strengthen the existing excellent bilateral relations with India".

According to sources from Indian External Affairs Ministry, Modi will land in Dhaka on June 6 morning, with a series of engagements over two days.

During the visit, the two premiers would have official talks where the entire gamut of bilateral relations would be discussed. The Indian Prime Minister would also pay a courtesy call on President Md. Abdul Hamid.

Besides, both the Prime Ministers are expected to flag off a Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala bus service, and they would announce other services from Dhaka to Guwahati, Agartala and Shillong.

The two Prime Ministers are expected to sign a protocol on the historic Land Boundary Agreement to resolve the 40-year-long border crisis between Bangladesh and India.

Besides, the Teesta water sharing issue is likely to come up prominently during discussion between the two Prime Ministers when India may announce to sign the agreement, sources said.

The Indian Prime Minister is expected to give a public address at Dhaka University.

He is likely to visit the famous 12th century Dhakeshwari Temple as details of the Prime Minister's visit and agenda for bilateral talks have not yet finalized.

Sources in Bangladesh foreign and finance ministries earlier said that India is expected to offer Bangladesh $2 billion in fresh loans for road, rail and port connectivity projects during Narendra Modi's visit.

Bangladesh has already identified 15 projects in consultation with the Indian government in which the funds can be used, they added.

They said that Modi may also announce supply of an additional 500 MW power to Bangladesh, easing of visa regime, and e-tourist visa facilities for Bangladeshi citizens.

On the other hand, the Bangladesh PM is expected to offer an exclusive economic zone for Indian investments, sources added.
