6 gunned down in Khagrachhari

At least six people were gunned down and four others injured in a deadly gunfight between two factions of Chattogram Hill Tracts-based political group United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) at Swanirbhar in Sadar upazila on Saturday morning.

Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said the gun battle between the two factions of 'UPDF Prasit' and 'UPDF Democratic' groups broke out over establishing control over the area around 8am, leaving the six people dead.

The deceased were identified as Tapan Chakma, the district unit president of Prasit group's Pahari Chhatra Parishad, its joint secretary Elton Chakma, Ganatrantrik Jubo Forum leader Polash Chakma, backed by United Peoples' Democratic Front (UPDF-Prasit), Jiten Chakma, health assistant of Mohalchhari Health Complex, Dhiraz Chakma, an employee of a Dhaka-based company, and Rupam Chakma, a student of Bangladesh Open University, UNB reports.

Three of the injured were referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as they suffered bullet wounds.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Ali Ahmed Khan, Police Super of the district.

"Additional forces have been deployed to avoid further trouble in the area," he said.
Vehicular movement on Khagrachhari-Panchhari road remained suspended after the incident.

On May 3 last, Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, 55, chairman of Naniarchar upazila parishad and a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of the parishad complex in Rangamati.

Later, five people were killed and eight others injured in a gun attack on a motorcade of the followers of slain Naniarchar upazila parishad chairman Shaktiman Chakma at Betchhari in the upazila on May 4 while they were going to attend the funeral programme of Shaktiman.
