Pay Eid bonus by August 16

Govt orders RMG unit owners
STAFF REPORTER
Pay Eid bonus by August 16

The government yesterday ordered readymade garments (RMG) factory owners to pay the Eid festival bonus to workers by August 16. Besides, capable factory owners have been asked to pay the partial salary of the current month by August 19 after holding discussions with garments workers The state minister for labour and employment, Mujibul Haque Chunnu, made the announcement at a special meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee held at the Secretariat.

The decision comes against the backdrop of law enforcement agencies apprehending outbursts among a section of RMG workers over the payment of wages and bonus ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, sources said.

The government authorities concerned and garments factory owners have already been told about the matter.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers' and Exporters' Association (BGMEA) vice-president SM Mannan Kochi, United Federation of Garments Workers' president Romesh Chandra Roy, Bangladesh Jatiya Garments Sramik-Karmachari League president Sirajul Islam Rony, and representatives of BKMEA, BTMA, police and intelligence branch officers attended the meeting.

There was no dissatisfaction among garments workers regarding the implementation of decisions during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, the state minister said, adding, “We celebrated the Eid-ul-Fitr very nicely without any major hassle. We hope that there will be no problem this time too.”

“We request all RMG owners to announce Eid holidays in

phases to avoid traffic congestion on highways,” Mujibul Haque Chunnu told the meeting.  He directed the RMG factory owners to pay wages, bonus and other dues after discussions with the workers.

However, the representatives of law enforcement agencies suggested that the authorities concerned pay special attention to some RMG factories as there might be anger among the workers over wages and bonus. Eid-ul-Azha is likely to be celebrated on August 22, subject to the sighting of the moon.
