AL candidate confident of win

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Gazipur
AL candidate confident of win

The Awami League (AL)-nominated mayoral candidate in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election, advocate Mohammed Jahangir Alam, yesterday expressed his belief that there would be a peaceful election in Gazipur on June 26. “People will go to polling booths in a festive mood to cast their votes. They will present me another Eid after the Eid-ul-Fitr. I want a model civic election,” he said.

Jahangir Alam, who is also the secretary of the Gazipur city AL, took part in the election campaign at Shimultoli area, bus station area, court area, and Lakhsmipura, Marialy, Harinal, Nilerpara, Adaboi and Samantapur areas of the city. He spoke at different rallies and distributed leaflets among the voters.

He urged the voters to cast their votes and elect him as the next mayor to build a modern and planned city. “Gazipur is an important area of the country after Dhaka. If I win this election, I will give special importance to the development of Gazipur,” he said.

Jahangir Alam also said that although the BNP candidate was elected here in the past election, he did not do any development work in the area. “There are no proper roads, no drains and no pavements. I’d like to build them if you elect me as your mayor. I want your votes,” he told the voters.

Gazipur is known as the second Gopalgonj in the country as the AL enjoys massive support here.  The AL does not want to lose the city’s mayoral post. All leaders and workers of the party are leaving no stone unturned to win the election.

There was intra-party feud over the AL’s nomination before the election, but now all the leaders of the district and city units of the party are working together to ensure victory for Jahangir Alam. They are going from door to door to seek votes for him and telling people about the development projects of the government. They are urging the voters to cast their votes in favour of Jahangir Alam.

Meanwhile, a number of central AL leaders went to Gazipur city areas and campaigned separately for Jahangir Alam.

According to Jahangir Alam’s media cell sources, barrister Mohibul Hsan Chowdhury Nowfel and advocate Kazi Murshed Kamal recently held a meeting with party leaders and activists at the AL office in ward no. 28 in the city.

Besides, AL central leader Osim Kumer Okil and SM Kamal attended a rally in the city’s Khailkoir area, while Sechchasebok League president Omer Faruk spoke at a meeting at the Sagor Saikot Convention Centre in the Gazipur Chowrasta area.

The newly elected mayor of Khulna City Corporation, Talukder Abdul Khaleque, also took part in the poll campaign in Gazipur yesterday. He spoke at different rallies along with Jahangir Alam and urged voters to elect Jahangir Alam as the city’s mayor.

Senior vice-president of the Gazipur city AL, Kazi Alim Uddin Buddin, advocate Shafikul Islam Babul, advocate Haris Uddin Ahmed, advocate Amanot Hossain Khan and Abdul Hadi Shamim also spoke at the rallies.
