New tech to fight illegal VoIP call terminations

The government has brought a new American technology to detect the exact locations of the SIM boxes that are used for illegal termination of VoIP (voice over internet protocol) calls. The technology is provided by Pennsylvania-based LATRO Services.

According to experts, the government has been losing millions of dollars in revenue since the past few years due to illegal call terminations.

Sources said the new technology has helped the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to detect a minimum of 3,500 SIMs issued by different mobile operators and raid 20 locations from where VoIP calls were terminated illegally.

“The new technology is affective as the American company is able to locate the exact location where the miscreants are doing the illegal call termination through VoIP. So let us see if it has any effect or not,” BTRC chairman Shahjahan Mahmood told The Independent yesterday.

Earlier, SIGOS and some other companies were engaged to detect the SIMs, which were used for illegal call termination. However, LATRO Services can detect the SIM boxes and the locations as well.

“We are almost puzzled as BTRC continuously calls us to help LATRO. The US company first detects the location of SIM boxes and then BTRC calls the operators that have issued the SIMs. Once an operator confirms the location, BTRC initiates a raid to take them out,” said an official with a mobile operator.

But the new technology does not reflect the volume of international calls—52 million minutes at present—that ultimately bring in the revenue.

“The revenue is falling as over the top (OTT) use was becoming popular day by day. People use platforms such as Viber and WhatsApp to call their relatives from aboard,” the BTRC chairman said. “There is still some potential for incoming international calls from Mideast. But we should detect the culprits that are making losses for the government by doing illegal VOIP,” said a BTRC official.

LATRO uses Versalytics geo-location information processes to zero in on suspected SIM box devices as part of its advanced detection algorithms. In addition, the integrated Google Earth visualization capability provides insights into operators and regulators, helping to enforce legal strategies against bypass devices.
