Khaleda wants peaceful movement : Fakhrul

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said their jailed Chairperson Khaleda Zia categorically asked them not to pay heed to anyone's provocation and continue the peaceful movement.

"Our leader (Khaleda) specifically told us to continue the movement in a peaceful manner without paying heed to anyone's provocation" he said while talking to reporters after meeting Khaleda in old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city.

He said their chairperson's morale is very high, and she is facing the adverse situation with courage. "She's thinking about the country staying in jail."

Fakhrul said their chairperson also asked them to inform people that she is mentally very strong and her physical condition is good. "She also said she's ready for any sacrifice for the sake of the country and democracy."

Earlier, an 8-member BNP delegation, including Fakhrul, met Khaleda in jail in the afternoon. It was the first meeting of party senior leaders with the BNP chief since she went to jail a month back after being convicted in a graft case.

Talking to Khaleda, Fakhrul said they could realise that she is very confident that the truth will prevail. "We also think the truth will finally be established."

He alleged that the government has 'unlawfully' kept their party chief in jail in completely a 'false' case. "They (govt) are trying to prolong her stay in jail resorting to various tricks. "We believe it'll be removed soon."

The BNP leader said they will carry out their movement for freeing Khaleda and restoring democracy alongside continuing a legal battle.

Replying to a question, he said their party and its movement are now run by a joint leadership. "We're taking all the decisions in consultation with our acting chairman."

Fakhrul said they got the chance to meet Khaleda after submitting an application to the Home Secretary.

The BNP delegation met Khaleda around 3:15pm and came out of the jail around 4:32pm.

The other members of the delegation are BNP standing committee members, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sircar, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Mirza Abbas, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Khaleda's personal secretary ABM Abdus Sattar.

On February 8 last, a special court here sentenced Khaleda to five years' rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Khaleda, a 73-year-old a former prime minister, was taken to the old central jail minutes after the verdict had been delivered.

After her conviction, Khaleda's relatives, including her sister Selina Islam, brother Shamim Iskandar, his wife Kaniz Fatema, met her in the jail.

Besides, Khaleda's lawyers Moudud Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sircar, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Abdur Rezzak Khan and AJ Mohammad Ali also met her on February 10. UNB.
