Mash goes great gun as Abahani on top

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza hogged the headline yet again by becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to claim four wickets in consecutive four deliveries in the List A cricket. It was also his first hat-trick in any level of cricket, a feat that helped his side Abahani secure an 11-run win over Agrani Bank Limited in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.

Mashrafe ended the match with a figure of six for 44 run sin 9.5 overs finally to bowl Agrani Bank out for 279 as they were chasing the target of 291. Abahani earlier piled up 290 for six, thanks to a blazing 123 ball-133 not out of youngster Nazmul Hossain Shanto. Shahriar Nafees also replied with a century for Agrani Bank before he was dismissed on 121 runs but all the matters came to second as Mashrafe made it his day.

Mashrafe took the onus to bowl at a time when Nafees’s century made Agrani Bank clear favourite as they needed 13 runs with four wickets at the hands in the last over. He conceded a single in the first ball, leaving Agrani Bank 12 in last five balls. Knowing that the batsmen would go for all out attack, Mashrafe employed a strategy to baffle them through cutters and it worked well.

He started it with the wicket of Dhiman Ghosh then took out Razzak and Shafiul Islam to complete his first hat-trick in his career. But he didn’t stop, he made it four in four and bundled out Agrani Bank by dismissing Fazle Rabbi.

Nazmul Hossain earlier drove the side to the safe zone after Anamul Haque Bijoy and Saif Hassan made a decent start to the side. Both of the openers were dismissed in 20s but Shanto made his start count by making a century. He struck 11 fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 133 to hold together the innings. Mohammad Mithun was the other notable scorer, hitting 46 off 38.

Abahani however led the point table with 14 points in eight matches, five points clear than the next rivals Prime Doleshwar who had nine points in eight matches. Prime Doleshwar could make it 11 had Prime Bank not beat them by one-wicket in high scoring thriller at the BKSP ground.

Marshal Ayub’s 135 off 128 guided the side to a respectable 286 for five but Mehrab Hossain Junior’s maiden List A century trumped Marshal’s effort as Prime Bank raced to the victory with just two balls to spare.

It was the match that Prime Bank was supposed to win easily after Mehrab and Mehedi Maruf put on a 147-run partnership for the opening stand. As Maruf was dismissed on 82, Prime Bank lost five wickets for 42 runs before Mehrab and Sajjdul Haque formed a 45-run partnership to get the side back on track. However Farhad Reza got the better of Mehrab when he made 102 off 125 with 13 fours, making the contest tricky one again.

But Sajjadul Haque who struck 51 off 38 with one four and three sixes and the lower order finally sailed the side home.  Gazi Group Cricket Cricketers edged Mohammedan Sporting Club by 29 runs in a low-scoring affair at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the day’s other match. Qazi Anik bowled tremendously, grabbing four for 28 as Gazi Group were bowled out for 137 in 35.4 overs. Asif Ahmed was the highest scorer with 35. Mohammedan however was skittled out for 108 in 33.2 overs, wrapping up another disappointing day for them.
