Bangladesh Tele-communication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has imposed a fine of Tk 5.17 crore on Grameen-phone for installing towers in border areas without consent of the regulator.
Commission took the decision at its 211st meeting held on January 30.
‘‘According to BTRC rules, a telecom operator needs a no-objection certificate from security forces as well as permission from the telecom regulator to set up a base transceiver stations (BTS) within eight kilometers from the border. In this case, the operator has violated both the rules,” a BTRC top official said.
Senior official of BTRC told the independent that the commission would issue a letter to GP next week asking the operator to deposit fine of Tk 5.17 crore.
“We are not aware of such decision by BTRC and so cannot comment further at this point of time,” GP in statement told The Independent.
The telecom regulator fined GP for 17 towers in the border areas.
