Spandan set to celebrate
two decades of its journey

On the occasion of completing two-decade (24 years) eventful journey in the country’s cultural arena, prominent dance troupe Spandan is set to hold a daylong celebration programme today on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

The programme features rally, dance performance, discussion, award ceremony and staging dance-drama.

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will attend the programme as chief guest at 6pm, while BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky, Sammilito Sangskritik Jote General Secretary Hasan Arif, senior director of Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Bangladesh Dr Rafiqul Islam, director of Panjeree Publications Kamrul Hasan Shayok and Bangladesh Nritya Shilpi Sangstha president Minu Haq will be present as special guests.

President of Spandan Rezaur Rahman Sinha will preside over the event.

As a part of the celebration, artistes of Spandan will stage Tagore dance-drama ‘Shapmochan’ choreographed by Minu Haq at 7pm.

Rabindranath Tagore’s popular dance-drama ‘Shapmochan’ is the story of Sourasen and Madhushree, who were born on earth after being banished from Lord Indra’s court. Sourasen, a handsome musician in Indra’s court, failed to keep the beat with Urvashi’s dance, being unmindful about Madhushree’s delay in returning from worshiping the Sun God. Lord Indra was angry and cursed Sourasen to be born on earth as an ugly looking person. When Madhushree returned and heard about the punishment, she requested Lord Indra not to separate her from Sourasen and desired the same punishment for herself. Lord Indra agreed and maintained that only if Madhushree fell in love with Sourasen’s inner beauty in his reincarnation as an ugly person on earth, would both Sourasen and Madhushree be redeemed back to heaven-‘Shapmochan’.
