Had no doubt that we could save the Test - Mominul

Mominul Haque, the Bangladesh batsman, said on Sunday (February 4) that the hosts went into the final day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka with no doubts that they can save it, despite losing three quick wickets on the penultimate day of the Chittagong Test.

The charge of saving the game was led by Mominul, who became the country's first batsman to score a century in both innings of a Test and helped the hosts secure a noteworthy draw after they put themselves in a difficult position after an enduring fourth day.

The diminutive left-handed batsman struck 105 off 174 balls following his 176 in the first innings and posted a record fourth-wicket stand with Liton Das (96) that helped the hosts reach 307 for 5 before the two teams accepted a draw with an hour left on the fifth day's play.

A sense of deja vu seemed to have gripped Bangladesh and it looked like they were staring at a defeat despite scoring a mammoth 513 in the first innings after Sri Lanka came up with an able reply, posting 713-9 declared.

The hosts did not require to look far, having already faced a similar situation against New Zealand last year in Wellington, where they lost despite posting over 500 in their first innings.

Bangladesh had scored 595-8 runs at the Basin Reserve, yet managed to find a way to lose the game, earning them the dubious distinction of scoring the most runs in a defeated Test.

"I would keep the second one ahead (of the century in the first innings), because it helped save the match," Mominul told reporters when his attention was drawn to compare the two centuries. "We have been in this situation before. You have to be mentally strong and believe in yourself.

"I think that has come from everyone in the team including the management and even those guys who help us out.'Riyad bhai (Mahmudullah) told me the same thing, that we shouldn't have any doubt that we can't save this game."

Mominul added that he and Liton Das reduced their workload by planning to bat session by session as thinking of a plan otherwise would have increased mental pressure.

"Liton and I took it session by session, hour by hour," said Mominul. "We didn't consider batting the whole day, which would have been tough to plan," he said adding that he was prepared to play against more turn and spin.

"I thought it would turn a bit more. I didn't want to be surprised with the turn."

Mominul added that there is no special reason behind his success in Chittagong, where he has notched up five centuries, and added that he does not carry any extra confidence while coming to play at the venue.

"I don't think there's any special reason. I haven't scored here in the last two or three Tests, so I don't really come here thinking I will get a score. I think it is Allah's Grace that I get runs here."Cricbuzz.
