UN seeks environment in Rakhine for Rohingya repatriation

Visiting UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar Yanghee Lee on Tuesday laid emphasis on creating an environment in Rakhine for the sustainable return of Rohingyas to their homeland.

She met Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and expressed satisfaction over the overall situation in Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar district, an official told UNB.

The UN special envoy also said she is aware that Bangladesh is working to make sure that the return of Rohingyas to their homeland should be done voluntarily, said the official.

Lee completes her Bangladesh visit on Wednesday and the human rights expert will present a report to the Human Rights Council in March 2018, another official told UNB.

The envoy visited Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar and listened to horrific tales of tortures from displaced Rohingyas.

From Dhaka, she will be heading towards Thailand where she will be visiting Bangkok, Mae Sot and Chiang Mai.

Meanwhile, the National Taskforce will hold a meeting on Wednesday to review the overall security aspects of Rohingyas and the situation in the camps. The Foreign Secretary will chair the meeting.
