5 ways to keep your eyes healthy

It’s important to keep your eyes healthy, especially during the busiest time of the year. The holidays can be stressful, but it’s not an excuse to neglect your eyes. Here are a few ways to take care of your eyes this winter.

1. Prevent Winter Dry Eyes

The winter air is equally drying to the eyes whether indoors and outdoors.
The winter air may cause irritated, itchy, and dry eyes and sometimes blurry vision.
A humidifier can help maintain moisture in the home or office.
If you’re wearing contact lenses, always keep a bottle of eye drops handy to keep your lenses moist.

2. Shield Your Eyes from UV Radiation and Debris

Snow reflects almost 80% of UV light, nearly doubling your exposure while outdoors.
Always remember to wear 100% UV protected-sunglasses and sunscreen during long periods of outdoor exposure.
Polarized lenses absorb glare and prevent fatigue, allowing your eyes to relax.
Goggles can also protect your eyes from debris, like dirt, slush, ice, and bark, while you are outside.

3. Protect Yourself from Eye-Related Illnesses

Be careful not to share your makeup such as mascara or eyeliner with your girlfriends. This will prevent you from picking up bacteria or virus, such as pink eye.
Avoid making contact with a person who has or is being suspected of having a “pink eye”.
Wash your hands frequently with soap or hand sanitizer and avoid touching your eyes.

4. Undergo Eye Checkup

The American Optometric Association recommends annual exams for anyone with current vision problems (wearing contacts or eyeglasses).
Make sure your specs are always updated.
Visit your eye doctor at the first sign of vision change or if you are experiencing unexplained, constant headaches and other related symptoms.

5. Hydrate and Eat Food Rich in Omega-3

Drink lots of water.
Increase intakes of fluid-rich food, such as soups, fruits, and vegetables.
Eating a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids can help relieve dry eyes.
Tuna, salmon, mackerel, and trout are some of the good sources of this type of fish oil.
