Noted singer Shammi Akhtar passes away

Noted singer Shammi Akhtar has passed away at a city hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

He breathed her last at Health Aid Diagnostic and Hospital in the capital's Atish Deepankar road at 4:15pm.

The renowned singer had been suffering from breast cancer since a long time, sources said.

She was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday morning after her condition deteriorated further, sources added.

She left behind husband, a son, and a host of friends, relatives, well-wishers and admirers to mourn her death.

She won Bangladesh National Film Award in 2010.

Her popular renditions like Dhaka Shohor Aisa Amar Asha Furaichhe, Ami Jemon Achhi Temon Robo Bow Hobonare, Bhalobasleo Sobar Sathe Ghor Badha Jaina and others won the hearts of millions.

She then lent her voice to more than 300 songs in Bangla films.
