BNP yet to decide on candidate

The BNP is still undecided on fielding Tabith Awal as the party's mayoral candidate for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-poll. Although the name of Tabith Awal, who contested the DNCC polls as the BNP's mayoral candidate last time, is being discussed widely, there are two more aspirants for the post. They are BNP vice-chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu and assistant publication secretary Shakil Wahed, said party leaders.

The party that has in principle decided to take part in the by-election, earlier decided that it would field its mayoral candidate after the poll schedule is announced and after the ruling party names its candidate, said the leaders.

It is widely believed that former BGMEA president, Atiqul Islam, is going to be the party's mayoral candidate for the DNCC by-poll, but no announcement has been made.

BNP standing committee member, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, told The Independent that they are yet to finalise the party’s mayoral candidate. “The party’s candidature is

being discussed. But no decision has yet been taken,” he said. The senior leader said the party would decide its candidate after the election schedule is announced.

The Election Commission (EC) is supposed to announce the poll schedule at a press conference today (Tuesday). The election is likely to be held on February 26, according to EC sources.

At a press conference at the party's central office yesterday (Monday), BNP secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, told journalists that they have in principle decided to take part in the DNCC mayoral poll, but they are yet to decide who the party candidate would be.

“The policymaking body of the party has decided that we will take part in the DNCC mayoral poll. However, the party candidature has not yet been finalised. We will let you know when it is finalised,” he said.

Tabith Awal, an executive member of the BNP, said he is waiting to get party nomination to contest the DNCC mayoral poll.

“The party candidature will be finalised after announcement of the poll schedule following due process. I hope that the party will consider me as the party candidate, and I will be able to contest the poll, as I did the previous time,” he said.

Shakil Wahid said he wants to be the party's mayoral candidate and he is prepared for it. He hoped that he would be the party candidate if all of his aspects are taken into consideration. Shakil, however, said he is also ready to accept the party's decision to nominate the candidate.

He said he has already prepared a draft election manifesto for the DNCC poll with the slogan “Make a world class city.”

The DNCC mayor's post has fallen vacant following the death of Mayor Annisul Huq.
