Quader suggests BNP not be panicked about polls

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday suggested BNP not be panicked about the next general elections, saying that the polls will be held in a free and fair manner.

"There is no reason for BNP to be panicked about the next (general) elections as it will be held in a fair way ... there won't be any anxiety and uncertainty regarding the polls and all will be over," he said while exchanging New Year greetings with reporters in the conference room of his ministry here yesterday morning.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, said according to the country's history, volatility, crisis and darkness vanish as fast as they come.

Expressing the hope that the next polls will be held on time, he said the panic and uncertainty the BNP is talking about won't exist.

"Free, fair and participatory polls will be staged in a beautiful environment with the participation of BNP and other registered (political) parties," he said.

The minister said the BNP will have to participate in the polls. "They'll come to the elections ... nobody believes that they'll repeat the mistake of boycotting polls," he said.

He added that the BNP comes up with big demands in a bid to realize at least some things.

Replying to a question what will be the role of Bangladesh in the preparation of the list of "illegal Bangladeshis" in the Indian state of Assam, Quader said: "We're keeping an eye on the matter and we'll discuss with Delhi in case of any problem after publication of the list."BSS.
