New arrivals of Rohingyas now 647,000

Some 647,000 new arrivals of Rohingyas were reported as of December 12, according to IOM Needs and Population Monitoring (NPM) report released yesterday, reports UNB. The increase in the number of refugees is not as a result of a significant influx of refugees across the border, but instead due to strengthened assessments, said the UN Migration Agency.

The full report and dataset will be available in the coming days. This report, produced by Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) in collaboration with humanitarian partners, covered the December 8-11 period.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat yesterday said the United States would give a grant of 14.5 million US dollars to help the Rohingya people, who are now being sheltered in Bangladesh.

s"The United States of America feels proud to be a part with Bangladesh in helping Rohingyas, who have fled from Myanmar," she said when she made a courtesy call-on Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim at secretariat. Hailing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as well as Mohammad Nasim for ensuring health services for the Rohingya people within a short time, Bernicat said Bangladesh had done a great humanitarian task by giving shelter to Rohingyas.

Health Minister Nasim expressed his gratuity to the US for playing an effective role at the United Nations Security Council on the Rohingya issue. During the meeting, they also discussed bilateral issues of common concerns.

Health Services Division Secretary Md Sirajul Haq Khan, Health Education Division Secretary Foyez Ahmed and Additional Secretary of the ministry Md Habibur Rahman Khan, among others, were present.
