The 12th edition of ‘Dhaka University Central Annual Theatre Festival’, organised by Theatre and Performance Studies Department of Dhaka University (DU), has begun at the TSC (Teachers' and Students' Centre) Auditorium of DU yesterday. DU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the festival yesterday, while Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor was present as chief guest. Chaired by Theatre and Performance Studies Department Chairman Ahmedul Kabir, DU Pro- Vice Chancellor (Education) Dr Nasreen Ahmad, Arts Faculty Dean Professor Dr Abu Md Delwar Hossain and Mercantile Bank Chairman AKM Shaheed Reza were present as special guests at the event. After the inauguration, the weeklong festival opened with the Tagore's play ‘Chandalika’ directed by Sadia Mahbub Sara. Later on, ‘Neel Danshan’, a play based on the novel of Syed Shamsul Haq and directed by Moniruzzaman Ripon, was staged in the same evening.

Today, on the second day of the festival, three plays will be brought on the stage. ‘Moronbilash’—a play directed and dramatized by Riaz Tarque, based on the novel of Ahmed Shofar, will be staged today, while Maria Khanom Mim-directed play ‘Bagh’ and Paul Howard Surridge's play ‘Uddoktya Mon’, translated by Mim Arafat and directed by Ehsanul Abedin, will be staged. The eight-day theatre festival will conclude on December 18 and the staging of the plays starts at 6pm every day.
