DU mum on hunger strike demanding Ducsu poll

Although 10 days have elapsed after Walid Ashraf, an evening master’s student of the university, started an indefinite hunger strike demanding Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election, DU authorities yet remain silent on the much-hyped issue.

Walid Ashraf, an evening master's degree student of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research of Dhaka University (DU), went on the hunger strike on November 25 on the premises of Memory Eternal in front of the Vice-Chancellor residence.

After Walid started the solo protest programme demanding the Ducsu poll, scores of general students, many student organisations and even the teachers visited him and expressed their solidarity with him.

Professor MM Akash of Economics Department, Prof Anwar Hossain, former Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, Prof Geeti Ara Nasreen of Mass Communication & Journalism Department visited Memory Eternal and expressed their solidarity with Walid.

On December 2, students lit candles on the Memory Eternal premises and chanted slogan demanding Ducsu poll. They also drew graffiti on the roads and several walls of the university buildings demanding the election.

On Monday, a group of students also arranged concert for Ducsu poll and expressed solidarity with Walid.

On the other hand, Walid is getting weaker day by day as he didn’t take any food except water in the last 10 days.

On last Saturday night, students of DU took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as he fell sick. Later doctors prescribed Walid to take saline to get hydrated.

Walid Ashraf said he would continue the strike until death if the authorities concerned do not pay heed to his demand.

“The VC has to come up with the declaration of the Ducsu election before December 16, otherwise, I’ll not break hunger strike until death,” he added.

Contacted, DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman said everyone has right to express opinion.

“We will never interfere in anyone’s democratic rights until his opinion or step creates any security problem for the university,” said the VC, adding that the university administration is trying to take all necessary steps to hold the Ducsu poll.

It's been 27 years since the last election of the Ducsu was held on July 6, 1990.unb.
