DNCC by-polls within 90 days of gazette: EC

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday said that by-election to the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) would be held when the local government announces the post vacant. The last mayor, Annisul Huq, passed away November 30, 2017. “The local government will issue a circular saying the mayoral post of DNCC has been vacant due to the demise of Annisul Huq. The the by-election will be held within 90 days from the date of announcement,” said EC secretary in-charge Helal Uddin Ahmed. He told this to reporters after a meeting, which was headed by chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda, with the UNDP delegation at the Election Bhaban in the capital.

Since the law of the local government election has been amended with the inclusion that local government polls in city corporation, municipality and upazila will be held under the banner of registered political parties, the DNCC poll will also be held under party symbols.

It will be the first election for DNCC when the candidates of registered political parties will contest the by-poll with party symbols.

“Local government elections are being held under the party banner. This election will be the same,” the EC secretary said.

Asked about whether the 18 wards added to the DNCC would come under the process of the by-election, Helal Uddin said: “It’s difficult to say anything about it right now. But we've already prepared the voter list of these areas. The EC will take the decision.”

“Right now, it cannot be said whether elections to these wards would be held or not. The matter would be scrutinised,” he added.

In July, the Local Government Division added 36 wards to Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations.

Earlier, Dhaka North had 36 wards. With the inclusion of the new wards, its number of wards has risen to 54, while the number of wards in Dhaka South has increased to 75 from the previous 57.

Asked about the meeting between the EC and the UNDP delegation, the EC secretary said: “The UNDP has emphasised the awareness for increasing women voters. Besides, they talked about digitisation of of electoral process and extending technical support.”
