Zahangir Alom’s solo exhibition begins at AFD today

A two-week solo painting exhibition titled ‘Pinjor Mukto’ (The Uncaged) by artist Zahangir Alom will begin today at the La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD), Dhanmondi in the capital. Eminent artist Professor Rafiqun Nabi will attend the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest today evening, while Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University Professor Nisar Hossain will be present as the special guest and Editor and Publisher of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam will attend the event as the guest of honour. Presided over by AFD Director Bruno Plasse, curator’s speech will be given by Dr Malay Bala, Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Oriental Art, University of Dhaka.

Zahangir Alom’s paintings delineate the blossoming beauty and diversity of nature. As with blossoming flowers to the sun, the artworks depict a certain emblematic intercession, a solemn prayer to espouse eternity. An ardent disciple of nature, Alom observes her with both his sight and insight. He tries to capture the multifarious expressions, moods and soulful ballads of nature in, for example, his series of paintings titled ‘Mystic Romance of the Woods’. Through this observation, Alom finds himself in the midst of a fantastical mystery that captivates him and fuels him. He also becomes fascinated by the mythical nuances and the effortless grace of Bangladesh.

As an enthusiast of Baulism and Vaishnavism, Alom depicts the union of souls in a passionate way. Using watercolour, he has come up with a language of his own. Each of Alom’s paintings is a testament to that. Along with his works with oil and acrylic, his art evokes an integrated form of oriental art as well as contemporary approaches. The exhibition will come to an end with music and dance performance on the final day.

The exhibition will remain open to all, until December 15  and can be visited according to the following schedule— Monday to Thursday from 3 pm to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday (9 am to 12 noon and 5 pm to 8 pm; closed on Sunday.

Where: AFD, 26 Mirpur Road, Dhanmondi.
