Munier Chowdhury and Zakaria Memorial Award conferred

To mark the 82nd birth anniversary of martyred intellectual Professor Munier Chowdhury, Theatre, a prominent theatre troupe in the country, organised a commemorative event on Monday at the National Art Plaza of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, where Munier Chowdhury Award and Mohammad Zakaria Padak (Memorial Award) were conferred.

This year, eminent dramatist, director-actor and Dhaka University Professor Israfil Shaheen received the Munier Chowdhury Award, while young dramatist and actress Ruma Modok awarded with Mohammad Zakaria Padak. The awardees received BDT 50000 and BDT 25000 respectively.

Prime Minister's International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi attended the award giving ceremony as chief guest and handed over the awards to the recipients, while Shah Alam Sarwar, Managing Director and CEO of IFIC Bank Limited was present as special guest. Chaired by Ferdousi Majumdar, Theatre’s director Ramendu Majumdar delivered the welcome speech at the ceremony.  

After receiving Munier Chowdhury Award, Israfil Shaheen expressed his feelings, “I never worked for an award, but it is true that this type of achievement, like Munier Chowdhury Award, inspires us. Receiving Munier Chowdhury Award is a pride for me. I want to work for theatre until my death.”

Ruma Modok dedicated her award to the members of her theatre troupe Jibon Sangket of Habiganj. She said, “I am receiving this award on behalf of those theatre activists who are working for theatre overcoming obstacles of the mufassil town.”

In the second session of the programme, artistes of Theatre presented Munier Chowdhury’s play ‘Dondodhar’.

To note, to honour the veteran theatre activists, Theatre introduced the Munier Chowdhury Award in 1989, and to encourage the young Theatre introduced the Mohammad Zakaria Padak in 1997.

The past Munier Chowdhury Award recipients are— Muhammad Zakaria, Amalendu Biswas (Posthumous), Abdullah Al Mamun, Syed Jamil Ahmed, Ramendu Majumdar, Sayeed Ahmed, Ferdousi Majumder, Syed Shamsul Haq, Ataur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid, Nasir Uddin Yusuf, Selim Al Deen, Aly Zaker, Nikhil Sen, Asaduzzaman Noor, Zia Haidar, Moloy Bhowmik, Partha Pratim Majumder, Abdus Selim, Manoj Mitra, Aranyak Natyadal, Liaquat Ali Lucky, Mrittika Chakma, M Hamid and Keramat Moula.

On the other hand, past Mohammad Zakaria Padak recipients are— Ahmed Iqbal Haider, Mannan Hira, Shimul Yousuf, Thandu Raihan, Khaled Khan, Deb Prasad Debnath, Nasirul Haque Khokon, Masum Reza, Aminur Rahman Mukul, Foyez Jahir, Joglul Alam, Subhasis Sinha, Babul Biswas, Ashim Das, Sudip Chakrabarti, Samina Lutfa Nitra, Airin Parvin Lopa, Akhtaruzzaman and Abhijit Sen Gupta.
