Call to create awareness about silent killer disease

The World Diabetes Day 2017 with the theme “Women and diabetes - our right to a healthy future” was observed in Rajshahi through various programmes in a befitting manner yesterday.

The city units of Rajshahi Diabetic Association, Rajshahi Diabetic Kollan Kendra, administrations, different government and non-government organisations chalked out elaborate programmes to create mass public awareness about the silent killer disease and getting rid of it in leading a normal life.

The programmes included colourful processions, free blood and urine tests, discussion meetings and various awareness building initiatives about diabetes.

In observance of the Day, the Diabetic Welfare Centre brought out colourful procession and paraded various streets of the city with slogan “Act Today, Change Tomorrow”.

Dr Jahid, head of Diabetic Welfare Centre headed the rally, where Shariful Islam Babu, former Panel Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation, Freedom Fighter Mohammad Ali Kamal were attended the rally.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi Diabetic Association also brought out another colourful procession and paraded various streets of the city.

Later, separate discussion meetings were held at the various places, where the speakers discussed various aspects and importance of the Day to create awareness to assist the diabetes patients leading normal life. The speakers also demanded a ‘Diabetic Park’ in Rajshahi.

It is learnt, the world Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the IDF and the World Health Organisation in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007.
