Home Minster Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said there might be a conspiracy behind the Thakurpara arson attack on the Hindu community.

"The Rangpur incident is the recurrence of Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagr one. There might a plot behind it," he said.

The minister came up with the remarks while talking to reporters at Ramna Police Convention Centre after joining a reception accorded to those police members who put up the first resistance against Pakistani occupation forces at Rajarbagh on March 26, 1971, reports UNB.

Earlier on October 30, 2016, unruly mobs and zealots vandalised many Hindu houses and temples in five villages of Nasirnagar upazila in Brahmanbaria following a rumour of a Facebook post demeaning the Holy Kaaba.

Khan said an investigation into the incident is going on to unearth the reason behind the mayhem and identify the attackers.

Replying to a question, he said police could not prevent the incident as the number of attackers was much higher than them. "Several thousands people launched the attack together."

Earlier in the day, the minister visited Thakurbari village in Rangpur.

Talking to reporters there, he said the law enforcers have already arrested the mastermind of the arson attack, whose Facebook post triggered the agitation as it hurt the Muslims' religious sentiment. "The mastermind, Titu, was held from Nilphamari."

Khan said police carried out their duties as they were supposed to do, and those responsible for the agitation, no matter who they are, will be brought to justice. "Bangabandhu's Bangladesh is a non-communal country and no one can conspire here."

Earlier on Saturday morning, police filed a case against more than 2,000 people over the clash and detained 36 people from Gangachhara and Kotwali areas on Friday night in this connection.

Over a reported Facebook post by Titu Chandra 'demeaning' Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PUBH), around 8,000 people from nearby villages marched towards Thakurbari village, a Hindu-dominated village and vandalised and torched 8-10 houses of the Hindus on November 10.

On information, police rushed in, charged baton, fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the agitating people, leaving six injured with bullets.

A man was killed and 20 others, including four policemen, were injured during the clash.
