Fresh move to form third alliance

There is a fresh move to forge a third political alliance with some political parties outside the orbit of the two major alliances led by the Awami League (AL) and the BNP, according to sources. “An outline of forging the alliance has already been prepared. The announcement of the new alliance is likely to be given by this month after its finalisation. Top leaders of the parties concerned will also be consulted in this regard,” said a senior leader of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh.

The leader also said discussions are on, but the final decision has not yet been taken. Top leaders of the parties concerned will sit together after the return of Gana Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain from abroad.

“This will be a programme-based electoral alliance aimed at taking part in the next general election on a common platform,” he added.

The leader, preferring anonymity, said the alliance will have some proposals, including reduction of corruption, curbing of terrorism and decentralisation of the administration.

Replying to a question, the leader said the alliance would seek deployment of the Army during the next polls.

He also said at least four political parties are ready to forge the alliance that would also accommodate different professional bodies and social organisations.

Abdul Malek Raton, general secretary of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, said the move for formation of a third alliance is now in the final stages. “Talks among the top leaders are going on. An announcement is likely to be made after the return of Dr Kamal Hossain on November 8,” he added.

Mostafa Mohsin Montu, secretary general of Gana Forum, said that the final decision to form a third alliance would be taken after the return of Dr Kamal Hossain.

He also said that the political parties concerned have taken the matter

seriously this time. The previous move in this regard had failed due to different reasons, he added.

Bangabir Abdul Kader Siddique, president of the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Janata League, said he is hopeful about the formation of the third alliance. “We are discussing it at different forums. I think it will be formed in future,” he added.

Earlier, about four years ago, the move to forge the alliance had been shelved due to differences among the initiators. The initiative lost its momentum when one of the unity makers held a separate press conference, keeping many leaders out, and another influential leader was arrested on sedition charges.

Bikalpa Dhara chief AQM Badrudduza Chowdhury and Gana Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain were the first to take the initiative in the middle of 2013, a few months before the January 5 general election in 2014. Later, many leaders, including JSD president ASM Abdur Rab, BKSJL president Kader Siddique and Mahmudur Rahman Manna of Nagorik Oikya, were accommodated in the process.

A coordination committee was also formed to carry forward the process to form the alliance, but all activities apparently came to a standstill following the arrest of Mahmudur Rahman Manna.

Manna, who was picked up by law enforcement officials from Baridhara in the city on February 24, 2015, was released on December 19 last year.
