Shakib fastest to post 5,000 runs, 200wkts double

Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan became the fastest player to achieve the double of 5000 runs and 200 wickets in ODI cricket, during his 29 runs knock against South Africa in the first match of series yesterday at Diamond Oval, Kimberley. He got to the milestone in his only 178 matches as he needed just 17 runs to complete the double. Shakib is the fifth player in the world to do so. The other four all-time elite club members are Sri Lanka`s Jayasuriya (323 wickets and 13430 runs),

Jacques Kallis (11579 runs and 273 wickets), Pakistan`s Shahid Afridi (8064 runs a and 395 wickets) and another Pakistani cricketer Abdur Razzak (5080 runs and 269 wickets). But none of them reached the feat before their 200 matches. Kallis was the previous fastest player to achieve the feat, yet he

needed 221 matches, 43 matches more than Shakib. Jayasuriya needed 235 matches, while Afridi and Razzak got to the milestone in 239 and 258 matches respectively.

In doing so Shakib Al Hasan also became only second Bangladeshi batsman to score 5000 runs in ODI cricket after opener Tamim Iqbal.

This is another feather in Shakib’s illustrious career, which further established his dominance in all-rounder category in the world. Shakib was rested in the Test series in bid to get him as fresh. The 29 runs in the match though didn’t speak the volume of his capability, the knock came at the moment when Bangladesh looked to be panicked by the aggression of the South African bowlers in a mere flat pitch.

Captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza gave a masterstroke by sending Shakib in the one-down position in bid to tame the rampant host bowlers. Shakib did it with uncluttered mind as he is used to do always. His assured presence in the wicket gave the other batsman to express them freely and undoubtedly it came as good for Mushfiqur Rahim who was under tremendous mental pressure following the horrible result in the Test series.

Mushfiqur got his form back with a gutsy century to place Bangladesh in a strong position. And thereby Shakib proved to be an X-factor in the team as it was believed his presence could change the mood of the team.
