Int’l community to exert more pressure on Myanmar: Tofail

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Friday said the international community must exert more pressure on Myanmar to resolve Rohingya crisis.

"Bangladesh is trying its best to resolve the problem diplomatically. Pressure on Myanmar needs to be mounted to take back Rohingyas from Bangladesh," he said.

The Commerce Minister made the remarks after inaugurating two-day "Showcase Korea 2017' in the city.

He said Myanmar has already proposed to take back Rohingyas but it continued tortures, killings, burning down houses in Rakhine State.

"As a result, Rohingyas in thousands are still entering Bangladesh seeking safety and shelter," he said adding the new arrivals now stands over 536,000.

Korea Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry is hosting the two-day trade show at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB).

Korean Ambassador in Dhaka Ahn Seong-doo, Chamber President and Meghna Group Chairman Mostafa Kamal, LG Bangladesh Managing Director Edward Kim, Korea EPZ President Jahangir Saadat and Chamber senior vice president Sahab Uddin Khan, among others, spoke.

The Commerce Minister said there is a huge trade gap between Bangladesh and South Korea.

Minister Tofail said Bangladesh imported products worth US$ 1268.2 million while exported US$ 238.23 million in 2016-2017 fiscal year.

He said Bangladesh can export more and reduce the existing trade gap which is now in favour of South Korea.

Some 36 Korean companies are displaying their products and services in the Showcase Korea.unb.
