‘Criminal’ killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

A suspected criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with plainclothes police at Silaidah Kasba Ghat in Kumarkhali upaizla early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Shaheen, 30, son of Matiar Rahman of Nurpur village in Sadar upazila.

Sabbirul Islam, officer-in-charge of DB police, said police arrested Shahin on Thursday, and they along with Shaheen conducted a drive in the area around 3 am to hold other accused in the case.

Sensing the law enforcers’ presence, a group of criminals opened fire on the police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
After a brief gunfight, police recovered the bullet-hit body of Shaheen and took him to General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Police said Shaheen was wanted in a case filed for killing expatriate Rakibul Islam of Kumarkhali upazila.
Rakibul’s wife and younger brother reportedly hired Shaheen for killing Rakibul over an extramarital affair, police said.

Police also recovered one pistol, four bullets and a sharp weapon from the spot. UNB
