Bangladesh were off to a strong start in the SAF Under-16 Football Championship when they routed Sri Lanka 4-0 in at the Sylhet Stadium yesterday. By virtue of winning the match, Bangladesh sealed a semifinal berth as India also won against Sri Lanka 5-0 in their group first match on Sunday, Now Bangladesh will take on India in the group championship deciding match on Thursday at the same venue.
Bangladesh dominated the whole match and should have won it by a more big margin. The home team took an early lead in the 5th minute when Sarwar Jahan Nipu opened the account from a close range. Bangladesh had to remain content with 1-0 lead in the first half despite creating a number of scoring opportunities.
Abedin Rakib doubled the lead 15 minutes into the second half with a measured shot from outside the box. Atiq further increased the tally in the 76th minute when he neatly nodded home from a corner-kick.
Nipu completed the rout four minutes before the final whistle to send an impartial home crowd into jubilation.
Almost a packed stadium witnessed the home team playing an outstanding soccer and they always cheered the local boys to carry out sorties at regular interval.
