Muktamoni undergoes surgery at DMCH

Muktamoni, a little girl who has been suffering from an 'unknown disease', underwent surgery in her right hand at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday, report agencies. A 7-member team, led by Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit professor Dr Abul Kalam, started the surgery at the operation theatre of the unit around 8:50am and completed it around 10:45am, hospital sources said.

The 12-year-old girl, hailing from Satkhira, was taken to the operation theatre at 8:00am. Earlier, DMCH doctors conducted a biopsy on Muktamoni. The biopsy results showed that she has a tumor in her blood vessels in her right hand. She was admitted to the DMCH on July 11 last. During her admission to the hospital, she was very weak. "Muktamoni's physical condition is now very weak as she is suffering from anemia and malnutrition," coordinator of National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute at DMCH Dr Samanta Lal Sen told reporter after she was admitted to the hospital. “Blood flow in her body has reduced to such a serious degree that doctors are facing difficulties while taking blood samples from her for tests and diagnoses,” he added.

A seven-member medical board was formed for her treatment at the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Professor and head of Surgery Department of the institute Dr Md Abul Kalam is leading the medical board, he added.

Earlier, Health Minister Mohammed Nasim visited Muktamoni and inquired about her condition. “The Prime Minister has taken all responsibilities of Mukta’s treatment and we will hand over her to the family after healing,” he had said.

According to her father Ibrahim, a grocery shop owner of Kamarbaisa village in Sadar upazila of Satkhire, Muktamoni and her twin sister Hiramoni were a pair of healthy baby girls at birth. However, when Muktamoni was about 18-months-old, a wart appeared on her right arm. As the wart grew and began to hurt, her parents started to frequent local doctors for treatment.

Her arm has now grown abnormally large, weighing nearly as much as her body, and has festered with a painful infestation of parasitic worms
