AFD to screen ‘Legend of the Loom’ today

Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) has organised the screening of the documentary film ‘Legend of the Loom’ today at Auditorium Nouvelle Vague of AFD, Dhanmondi in the capital. The film has been produced in partnership with Bangladesh National Museum and Aarong. It takes the audience on a journey from the riverbanks of Bangladesh, the techniques practiced to create the finest and most sought after fabric in the world, its impact on the world of fashion and trade, and its current status. As part of the original project, a documentary film, known as ‘Legend of the Loom’ was completed in March, 2017.


Shot in the UK, France, India, USA and Bangladesh the film covers all aspects of muslin, from its source, production and usage to the impact it had on trade and politics. Starting from the earliest known beginnings of muslin to the current version of this craft, the film focuses on providing an entertaining, informative and accurate story of muslin.This ground-breaking film covers the full story of this legendary cloth. It covers the first foreigners to come to Bengal in search of its fine textiles, the establishment of empires and the opening of trade routes which began to connect the subcontinent to the wider world. Along the way, weavers, farmers, experts, designers, scientists and artisan’s give their views, add nuggets of information and display techniques which make the story come alive.
