‘Mega master plan’ to address waterlogging: Minister

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday said the government will formulate and implement a new 'mega master plan' to deal with the capital's perennial waterlogging problem.

"In recent years, waterlogging has turned out to be a mega problem for the capital. Even a moderate rainfall creates waterlogging almost everywhere in the city," he said while addressing an interdivisional coordination meeting on the city's waterlogging problem at Gulshan Centre Point.

Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Housing and Public Works Minister Engr Mosharraf Hossain and AKM Rahmat Ullah, MP, among others spoke at the meeting, held with Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Annisul Huq in the chair.

Speaking as the chief guest, Mosharraf said Dhaka Wasa formulated a master in 2005 to manage waterlogging of the capital, but it is not suitable in 2017.

Dhaka city's peripheries have increased by four folds as 16 union parishads have been included in the two city corporations and that is why Dhaka Wasa's master plan is now an obsolete one, he said.

The LGRD minister said: "We all are responsible for the city's waterlogging. City dwellers, public representatives and different agencies of the government must work together to address the waterlogging problem."

Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud stressed the need for taking integrated steps to address the capital's waterlogging problem.unb.
