2 killed in stampede, accident

RAJSHAHI, FEB 3: Two persons were killed in stampede and in road accident while attending invitation served by Shahriar Alam, Member of Parliament of Charghat-Bagha constituency. The incident occurred in the Chalk Singa village under Bagha Upazila on Friday morning. 
The deceased have been identified as Moslem Uddin(75) who died in stampede and Syeb Ali(35) who died in accident.
According to eye witness sources, on Friday noon local MP Shahriar Alam invited some 15,000 to 20,000 guests on the occasion of inauguration of his new house at Chalk Singa village under Arani Municipality.
After the Friday prayer, hundreds of people rushed to attend the invitation when Moslem Uddin (70) fell on the road and died of stampede.
On the other hand, after attending the invitation, Syeb Ali(35) of Chaksigra village under Arani Municipality was killed in a road accident. Both the deceased were residents of Chalk Sing village of Bagha Upazila.

AMB annual convention begins

DHAKA, FEB 3: A three-day annual convention of Ahmadiya Muslim Jammat Bangladesh (AMB) began at its headquarters in the city on Friday with a call to preach the real teachings of the Holy Quran and the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SM).
The convention was inaugurated by Maulana Mahmud Ahmad and special representative of the supreme head of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jammat, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, said a release of the AMB.

Schoolboy killed in road crash

KHULNA, FEB 3: A seven-year old school-boy was crushed under the wheels of a passenger bus at Maniktala Mor of Daulatpur on Khulna-Jessore highway under Daulatpur police station of Khulna city on Friday (Feb 3) morning.
The deceased was identified as Roni (7), a student of class one of Maniktala Primary School and son of Noor Islam of local Mahessarpasha village.
Officer-in-charge of Daulatpur thana Anwarul Haque Bhuiwa and witnesses said, the accident took place as a Khulna bound speeding bus J. R. Paribahan hit the school boy from behind in the area when he was trying to cross the road. No sooner Roni was knocked down on the road and the bus ran over him at around 11 am. He died on the spot. The killer bus managed to flee the scene.
The accident sparked an agitation among the local people who put a barricade by burning tires disrupting vehicular movement on Khulna-Jessore road for an hour (11am to 12pm).
On information, Daulatpur thana police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police recovered the dead body and sent it to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) morgue for autopsy. After autopsy the dead body was handed over to his parents for laid to rest, police said.
A case has been registered with Daulatpur thana police in this connection.

Nasir Uddin Shamim

CHITTAGONG, FEB 3: The first death anniversary of former government official, Nasir Uddin Shamim, the younger brother of Bureau Chief of The Independent and General Secretary of Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) Nazimuddin Shyamol will be observed on Saturday.
Nasir Uddin Shamim was born in 1970 at his village Shafinagar under Hathazari upazila in Chittagong. His father was late Engineer SMA Bari and mother was Nilufa Begum. He obtained BA and MA degree in Bengali literature from National University under Chittagong College. He worked at postal department as officer during his lifetime.
He died on February 4 in 2011.  Milad mahafil, quaran khani and jiarat will be arranged to observe the death anniversary.

Two die in separate incidents

CHITTAGONG, FEB 3: A woman was died and her grandson was critically injured when a Chittagong University bound shuttle train crushed them near Sholoshahar Station under Panshlaish police station in Chittagong on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Rotna Dey (45), wife of Subash Dey of Natunbazar area under Andharmanick union of Raozan upazila in Chittagong and the injured was her grand son Priobrata Das (1).
SI Jahirul Islam, in charge of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police box, told ‘The Independent’ that a Chittagong University bound shuttle train crushed Rotna Dey when she was crossing the rail line near the Sholoshahar Rail Crossing with her grandson on her lap leaving both of them critically injured at around 8.30am. A team of patrol police rescued them and rushed to CMCH where doctors declared Ratna dead, he said adding that the child lost one of his legs and now undergoing treatment.
Quoting the family members, SI Jahir said that Rotna Dey came here on Thursday to visit her daughter living near the Sholoshahar area and she came out for shopping along with her grandson on Friday morning. 
On the other hand Railway police recovered a body of unidentified man from beside the rail track at Fouzdarhat area under Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong.
SI Abul Kalam of GRP police station told ‘The Independent’ that getting information from locals, police recovered the body from Fouzdarhat Railway station at around 11am on Friday. The man aging between 35 and 40 was wearing a red shirt and black pant and there were several injury marks on his body.
The person might have fallen from a roof of a running train and succumbed to his injuries in the early hours on Friday, he suspects.

Two ‘fake’ officers arrested

RAJSHAHI, FEB 3: Identifying as employment authorities for the job in police department, two persons  from Rajshahi were realising a huge sum of money from the unemployed youngmen and women. But, they were nabbed by the members of RAB-5, Rajshahi from Rajshahi University campus area on Thursday afternoon.
RAB also recovered a number of fake appointment letters for various posts of police, one set of computer and a printer from their possession.
The arrested persons have been identified as Rais Uddin(32) son of Yeasin Ali of village Bak Simuil under Mohanpur thana and Ataur Rahman Akash(24) son of Montaz Ali of village Bhugrail under Shah Makhdum thana of Rajshahi city. 
According to Squadron Leader Kamrul Islam, Assistant Director of RAB-5, Rajshahi, one Ansar Ali of Chow Pukuria village under Durgapur Upazila of the district filed a complaint with the RAB-5 that he came with his son Selim Reza to Police Line in Rajshahi on December-26 last year for an interview  of his son in the job of police. While he was staying outside the Police Line after the interview with his son, two persons proposed him that they would employ his son to the job of police constable in consultation with the high ups of police department. They also identified themselves as recruitment authorities of police. Those two persons demanded taka 400,000 from Ansar Ali as kickback for his son’s recruitment.
According to the their demand, Ansar Ali paid taka 150,000 on January-28,2012 to Atuar Rahman Akash. Akash informed Ansar that the appointment of his son will be handed over to him on February-2, 2012 as against the payment of rest of taka 250,000. But, being suspicious about the activities of Akash and his cohort Rais Uddin, Ansar Ali informed the incident to the members of RAB, Binodepur camp.
RAB members, disguised as sportsmen arrested Rais Uddin and Ataur Rahman while they were handing over fake appointment letter of police job to Ansar and the money that Ansar promised to pay them as kickback from in front of Administration building of Rajshahi University.
Later on, according to the information of arrested persons, RAB members also recovered a computer set, a printer, fake documents of appointment as police and taka 25,000 from the house of Ataaur Rahman Akash.
Ansar Ali has field a case with Motihar thana in this connection.
