DHAKA, FEB 3: A book was launched on the majestic beauty of the Sundarban in the city on Friday where both locals and foreigners stressed on further initiatives to protect the world’s largest mangrove forest. Authored by UNB’s Editor-in-Chief, Enayetullah Khan, ‘The Bangladesh Sundarban’ book was published by the Wildlife Trust of Bangladesh.
It depicts the majestic beauty of the Sundarban through photographs and text as well as laying out its history and contemporary conservation challenges.
“The government has attached top priority to protect the Sundarban and a protocol has already been signed with India to protect it jointly,” Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Dr Gowher Rizvi said as the chief guest at the launching ceremony at Cosmos Centre.
Gowher Rizvi said the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Bangladesh and India for protection of biodiversity in the Sundarban during Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit in September would have immense effect in near future.
“We share the Sundarban with India and these two countries have come together to protect the forest and its biodiversity together, setting a milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two countries,” he said.
US Ambassador Dan Mozena, who spoke as the guest of honour, said the Sundarban typified the resilience of the people of Bangladesh in their efforts to face the onslaught of climate change. He said conservation was about caring and the best way to save the Sundarban’s fragile ecosystem was to raise awareness.
“This book will be a landmark in that direction,” he said.
Danish Ambassador Svend Olling said the prime responsibility of protecting the Sundarban lies with people of Bangladesh, but the Danish government would love to stand by the local efforts.
Enayetullah Khan said the purpose of the publication was to increase knowledge and raise awareness about the magnificent mangrove forest, its flora and fauna and the fortitude of the forest dwellers.    BSS
