DHAKA, FEB 23: Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Dr. Mizanur Rahman on Wednesday said, the extrajudicial killings in the country had significantly reduced following the formation of NHRC. “Though the extrajudicial killing has not totally stopped, it marked a sharp fall in the recent days. But we are working to reduce the number to zero. We are maintaining regular contacts with the home ministry on the extrajudicial killings and the protection of people's rights,” he told  a seminar at LGED Auditorium in the city. WAVE Foundation, Governance Coalition and Lok Morcha jointly organized the day-long national citizen conference with the demand of “Executing Participatory Democracy and Responsive Governance.”
Bangabandhu envisioned a dream to build a human rights-based society, Dr. Rahman said, the NHRC alone was not enough to establish the human rights in the country. “Our long time goal is to establish a human rights-based society in Bangladesh. But to achieve this goal, we all have to work together,” he said.
Stressing the need for a social movement to uphold the people's right in the country, Dr. Rahman said it would not be possible to establish good governance in the country without ensuring people's rights.  “We want to build such a society, where anyone can protest the irregularities and of any government officials,” he said adding “Everybody should be organised to wage a social movement to establish people's rights in the country.”
