DHAKA, Feb 3: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday said the government alone is responsible for killings in Chandpur and Luxmipur districts.
“We cannot allow this government to stay in the power any more,” she said adding that none could cling to power in the past through killings.
“The government will be unseated in a democratic way and through a peaceful programme.”
She was speaking with the leaders and workers from Chandpur and Luxmipur districts on Thursday late night when they visited her office after being released on bail. Khaleda urged them to prepare for the Chalo Chalo Dhaka Chalo programme scheduled for March 12 and to launch a massive mass movement.
“The government is too much scared of the people. That's why it resorted to resist the mass procession and killed people at Rajshahi, Luxmipur and Chandpur.”
“In the border, the BSF killed a Bangladeshi citizen and tortured him undressing. In Chandpur one person was killed and he was also undressed. We have to find out the police of which country did it.” She said.
She demanded immediate identification and punishment of the police personnel involved with the incident and withdrawal of cases against the people who took part in the mass procession.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP MPs from Luxmipur Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie and Ashrafuddin Ahmed Nijan also spoke.
Meanwhile, BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Friday said that the Prime Minister (PM) has delivered an irresponsible statement over the killing of four people by the police in Chadpur and Laksmipur in BNP district rallies on Sunday.
“The PM is telling that the opposition leader Khaleda Zia is responsible for the killing of the four persons. Whereas, Home Minister regrettably admitted that the four people were killed by the police. Such statement of PM shows her irresponsibility,” he said.
Moudud made the remarks at a human chain, organised by the Swadhinata Forum in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city.
He further said, “No government will be able to stay in power for long by killing people as it did not happen in the past or will not happen in future.”
Terming the reconstitution of the election commission as a drama, he said, “the government has formed a search committee with two active supporters of them by violating the constitution.
The names sent by the government will be recommended to the president. But the president has no power to recruit the election commissioners.
According to article 48(3) of the constitution, president will only recruited those as recommended by the PM. So the drama is clear now.”
